The remarkable Okavango Delta is unique, a 16,000km labyrinth of lagoons, channels and islands – the ‘river that never reaches the sea’ – supporting a breathtaking variety of life, including hippo, crocodile, warthog, wild dog and bush babies, along with several of Africa’s safari favourites and over 400 bird species. A short flight away by light aircraft is Moremi, one of the continent’s most attractive reserves, a verdant patchwork of lagoons and wooded pans, home to elegant predators such as leopard.
Savute is also noted for its predators, especially lion and hyena, though its watering holes attract myriad bird species too, from bee-eaters to fish eagles, that gather in flocks tens of thousands strong. And Chobe National park, near the Zimbabwean border, is famed for the large herds of elephant and buffalo that roam its plains – the extensive river network here allows unusual and peaceful game viewings by boat.
Last but by no means least, is Victoria Falls, a short drive away across the border.
